  • 1 cup butter, softened Make sure your butter is softened for easy mixing.
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs Beat in one at a time.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Dissolve in hot water.
  • 2 teaspoons hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chocolate chips
  • 1 cup red and pink M&M's Optional, for decoration.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  • Dissolve baking soda in hot water and add it to the mixture along with salt. Stir well.
  • Gradually add the flour to the mixture and mix until well combined.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips and red and pink M&M's if using.
  • Drop spoonfuls of dough onto ungreased baking sheets.
  • Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the edges are nicely browned.
  • Allow the cookies to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week; freeze for up to 3 months. For a chewier cookie, slightly underbake them. You can replace chocolate chips with nuts for a crunch. Sprinkle sea salt on top before baking for extra flavor.
