Ingredients
  

Base Dough Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature Ensure butter is at room temperature for smooth mixing.
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 teaspoon almond extract Can experiment with other flavors.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the powdered sugar and butter until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • Add in the egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
  • In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar, then gradually add this to the sugar mixture.
  • Mix until everything is well combined.
  • Divide the dough into two disc shapes, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for about 15 minutes.

Baking

  • Once chilled, roll out each dough disc to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired cookie shapes.
  • Place the cookies on a lightly greased cookie sheet or a Silpat mat and bake for 7-8 minutes.
  • Remove cookies from the oven and let them cool on the cookie sheet.
  • Once cooled, frost with royal icing.

Notes

To serve, decorate cookies with colorful icing and sprinkles. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week, or freeze them if needed.
