  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened For spreading on the bread.
  • 4 slices sourdough bread Artisanal recommended for best flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons fig jam Adds sweetness and binds the sandwich.
  • 1 medium apple, thinly sliced Fresh and crisp for best texture.
  • 4 ounces smoked gouda cheese, sliced For its creamy, smoky flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of sourdough bread. Place them butter-side down on a cutting board.
  • On two slices, spread 1 tablespoon of fig jam.
  • Evenly layer the apple slices over the jam.
  • Add 2 ounces of smoked gouda cheese on each sandwich.
  • Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out. Press gently to seal.

Cooking

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat.
  • Grill sandwiches for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  • Remove from pan and let sit for 1 minute.
  • Slice and serve warm.

Notes

Can be served with mixed greens or tomato soup. Store leftovers wrapped and in an airtight container for up to three days.
