Ingredients

For the Beef Marinade

  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye) Cut against the grain for tenderness.
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil (optional) Use if available.

For Cooking

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil Divided for marinating and cooking.
  • 1 large onion, sliced For sautéing.
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch For thickening the sauce.

Instructions

Marination

  • In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil. Toss the beef strips in the marinade and let them sit for 10-15 minutes.

Sautéing Onions

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper, then remove and set aside.

Cooking Beef

  • Increase heat to high, add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, and toss in the marinated beef strips. Stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes until browned and cooked through.

Combining

  • In a small bowl, whisk together remaining soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch. Pour this sauce over the cooked beef and simmer until it thickens.
  • Add the sautéed onions back into the pan, stirring everything together to combine.
