Main ingredients

  • 1 piece kaiser roll (or any sturdy sandwich roll), split
  • 1 piece breakfast sausage patty (pork or turkey)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 slice American cheese (or cheddar/pepper jack)
  • 1 tsp butter or a little oil (or sausage drippings)
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

Optional toppings

  • hot sauce
  • ketchup
  • spicy mayo
  • hash brown (optional, inside)

Instructions
 

Cooking

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the sausage patty for 3–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate, leaving some drippings in the pan.
  • Split the roll and toast it cut-side down in the same skillet (or toaster) until golden for 1–2 minutes.
  • Lower heat to medium-low. Add butter if the pan looks dry, crack in the egg, and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook sunny-side (2–3 minutes) or over-easy (flip and cook for 15–30 seconds).
  • Place cheese on the hot egg for 30–60 seconds (cover the pan briefly to melt faster).
  • Assemble the sandwich with the bottom roll followed by the egg + cheese, then the sausage patty, and top with the other half of the roll. Add optional hot sauce, ketchup, or mayo as desired.

Notes

Customize with various toppings and sauces for added flavor. Best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for a day.
