For the Filling

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Ideal for balance of tartness and sweetness.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar For sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt To enhance flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Adds freshness.

For the Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Base for the topping.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened Use cold for a flakier texture.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar For a deeper sweetness.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Helps the topping rise.
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup milk Moisture for the topping.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the apples with granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, salt, and lemon juice. Toss until well combined, then let sit for 15 minutes.
  • In another bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and the remaining 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Add the softened butter and mix until crumbly.
  • Pour in the milk and vanilla extract, mixing just until incorporated.

Assembly and Baking

  • Spread the apple mixture evenly in a greased baking dish, then spoon the cobbler topping over the apples, covering as evenly as possible.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator. For longer storage, freeze wrapped portions for up to 3 months.
