Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk at room temperature for better mixing
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring adjust for deeper color if desired

Frosting

  • to taste Cream cheese frosting for topping, can substitute with chocolate or vanilla frosting if preferred

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  • In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface, then spread a layer of cream cheese frosting over it.
  • Roll the dough tightly and slice it into individual rolls.
  • Place the rolls in a greased baking dish and let them rise for about 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Allow to cool slightly, then top with additional cream cheese frosting before serving.

Notes

Serve fresh out of the oven with a scoop of cream cheese frosting. Pairs well with coffee or milk. For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon to the dough. Allow to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
