Irish Barmbrack

A moist and flavorful Irish bread, traditionally made for Halloween and special occasions, featuring dried fruits and a hint of Irish whiskey.

Ingredients
  

Dried Fruits and Liquids

  • 150 g Raisins
  • 150 g Sultanas or Currants
  • 100 g Glace Cherries (optional) Optional for additional sweetness
  • 300 ml Strong, Cold Tea Preferably soaked overnight
  • 50 ml Irish Whisky (or extra tea for alcohol-free option) Optional for flavor
  • 1 medium Egg

Dry Ingredients

  • 200 g Caster or Soft Light Brown Sugar
  • 250 g Self-Raising Flour
  • 2 tsp Ground Mixed Spice (or pumpkin pie spice) Adjust according to taste
  • 100 g Orange Marmalade (optional) Optional for added flavor

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Soak raisins, sultanas (or currants), and glace cherries in 300 ml of strong cold tea, preferably overnight or for a few hours until plump.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a loaf tin or line it with baking parchment.

Mixing Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the soaked fruits (including any tea left), Irish whiskey (or tea), and the egg. Whisk together until well incorporated.
  • In another bowl, mix the sugar, self-raising flour, and mixed spice.
  • Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Gently fold in orange marmalade if using.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf tin and smooth the top.
  • Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the Barmbrack to cool in the tin for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Serve with butter for a delightful treat. Can be toasted for breakfast. Store wrapped in cling film or foil to maintain freshness.
