Preparation

  • Heat the olive oil over medium-low heat in a large skillet.
  • Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook briefly.
  • Add the tomato paste and stir to combine.

Cooking

  • Pour in crushed tomatoes and season with salt, black pepper, oregano, and optional red pepper flakes.
  • Simmer on low heat for 45 to 60 minutes, allowing the flavors to deepen.
  • Before serving, mix in torn fresh basil leaves.

Notes

Refrigerate leftover sauce in an airtight container for up to five days or freeze for three months. Consider adding carrots or celery for sweetness. Adjust thickness by simmering longer or thinning with water as needed.
