  • 1 roll 1 kaiser roll (or any sturdy sandwich roll), split
  • 2–3 slices 2–3 slices deli ham or 1 thick slice ham steak (about 3–4 oz / 85–115 g)
  • 1 large 1 large egg
  • 1 slice 1 slice American cheese (or Swiss/cheddar)
  • 1 tsp 1 tsp butter or a little oil
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Optional: Dijon or honey mustard, hot sauce, mayo, sliced tomato Use as toppings to customize.

Preparation

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little butter or oil. Add ham: Deli slices: warm 30–60 seconds per side (just until lightly browned at edges). Ham steak: sear 2–3 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate.
  • Split the roll and toast cut-side down in the skillet (or toaster) until golden, about 1–2 minutes.
  • Lower heat to medium-low. Add a bit more butter if needed. Crack in the egg and season with salt and pepper. Cook sunny-side for 2–3 minutes, or flip for over-easy (15–30 seconds).
  • Place cheese on the egg for 30–60 seconds and cover the pan briefly for faster melting.
  • Assemble the sandwich: Bottom roll → egg + cheese → ham → top roll. Add mustard/hot sauce/mayo if desired.

Notes

Experiment with different types of rolls or bread, and consider adding toppings like avocado or fresh herbs for a flavor twist. Serve with a light salad or fresh tomato slices for balance.
