  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour To help thicken the filling

For the oat topping

  • 1 cup 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 2/3 cup 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed Use cold butter for a crumbly texture

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Peel, core, and thinly slice about 6 medium apples (6 cups). Toss them into a large bowl.
  • Add 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour to the apples. Toss gently until evenly coated.
  • Transfer the apple mixture to a 9×9-inch baking dish, spreading evenly without packing tightly.

Making the oat topping

  • In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup rolled oats, 2/3 cup flour, 2/3 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Mix well.
  • Add 1/2 cup cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized bits.
  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  • Let the apple crisp cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
