Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large large sweet onions (Vidalia or yellow onions)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional) For added heat
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped For garnish

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Trim the tops and root ends of each onion, removing the outer skin while keeping them whole.
  • Cut deep slits from the top to the bottom of each onion to create a bloom effect, but ensure not to cut all the way through.

Cooking

  • In a medium-sized skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and stir in the minced garlic until fragrant.
  • Add the broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Stir well to combine.
  • Place the slashed onions in a deep baking dish and pour the broth mixture over them, ensuring they are well-coated.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 1 hour and 5 minutes, or until the onions are soft and tender.
  • During the last 10 minutes, remove the foil to allow the tops to brown slightly.
  • Sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the top of the onions before serving.

Notes

For the best flavor, use fresh, sweet onions. You can adjust the seasoning and add herbs like thyme or rosemary.
