Ingredients
  

For the sauce

  • 2 tbsp vegetable broth
  • 1.5 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 0.5 tsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 0.25 tsp ground black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water

Main ingredients

  • 1 lb broccoli (cut into bite-size florets)
  • pinch salt
  • 2.5 tbsp peanut oil (or any neutral oil)
  • 0.5 lb button mushrooms (sliced)
  • 4 dried Chinese chili peppers Adjust based on spice preference
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp ginger (minced)
  • 2 green onions (sliced) for garnish

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Mix the vegetable broth, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sugar, black pepper, sesame oil, cornstarch, and water in a bowl to make the sauce.
  • Steam the broccoli florets in a steaming basket over boiling water for about 3-4 minutes until bright green and slightly tender. Set aside.

Cooking

  • Heat peanut oil in a wok over medium-high heat, then add sliced mushrooms and cook until browned, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic, ginger, and dried chili peppers to the wok, sautéing until fragrant.
  • Stir in the steamed broccoli and the prepared sauce, mix well to combine, and let cook for an additional minute or two until the sauce thickens.
  • Garnish with sliced green onions before serving hot.

Notes

Serve this dish hot over a bed of steamed rice, quinoa, or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds or additional sesame oil for extra flavor.
